History & context — read more ▾
Skagen holds a special place in Danish art history. The characteristic light, the sea, the landscape, and the people around the former fishing village have inspired Danish artists for generations.
```Throughout his artistic career, Ole Otto Ernst worked with, among other things, Skagen, harbor environments, portraits, and figurative motifs. In his works, recognizable motifs meet a more personal and expressive choice of colors.
Mother Earth is an example of this approach. The monumental female figure is the central motif of the work, while the lighthouse, sea, and landscape anchor the composition in Skagen. The strong color fields give the motif a modern and graphic feel rather than a traditional naturalistic Skagen expression.
The poster is registered as Skagen 2000, poster no. 7/10, signed O.O. Ernst. The original painting Mother Earth is registered as oil on canvas in the format 100 x 160 cm.
Ole Otto Ernst (b. 1949) is a Danish painter, visual artist, and sculptor. He was born in Kolding and first studied at the Design School in Kolding and the Jutland Art Academy, before continuing at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1972.
```At the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he was a student of Erling Frederiksen, Svend Wiig Hansen, and Wilhelm Freddie, among others. His artistic work spanned several mediums, including oil, acrylic, lithography, and sculpture.
Ernst exhibited at, among other places, the Artists' Autumn Exhibition in 1976, 1978, 1980, and 1987, as well as at Charlottenborg in 1982. He received the Painter Helge Beck's Scholarship in 1980 and the Artists' Autumn Exhibition's First Prize in 1987. He also exhibited in several places in Denmark and internationally, including at Frederikshavn Art Museum.
His world of motifs included, among other things, Skagen, maritime environments, fishermen, boats, portraits, and figure compositions. Despite a solid artistic education and extensive exhibition work, Ole Otto Ernst is today a relatively less known name in broader Danish art history. His works continue to appear on the auction market, but without the price levels seen for the most established Danish post-war artists.
