Bjørn Wiinblad - Grotesque Lady with Hat Candlestick L11 – 1963
Whimsical and characteristic figurine candle holder designed by Bjørn Wiinblad, one of Denmark's most iconic ceramists and designers. The candle holder is shaped like a female figure with raised arms, wearing a tall, decorative hat as a candle holder.
The design is typical of Wiinblad's imaginative universe: a poetic face with fine, graphic eyes and rosy cheeks, organic ornaments, and a wealth of hand-painted patterns in green, blue, yellow, and pink hues. The figure is richly decorated all around with both painted details and small reliefs, giving it an almost narrative and theatrical expression.
The tall hat is adorned with characteristic Wiinblad ornaments and small sculptural elements, while the body is embellished with tree motifs and graphic patterns. The combination of sculpture and function makes the piece both a candle holder and an art object.
The base features the signature and "Danmark", and the piece is model 11 from 1963, placing it in Wiinblad's sought-after period in Danish studio pottery from the 1960s.
